Ooops....can't believe I haven't blogged the fair yet, so better get this one in before Christmas! I actually hate fairs. The smell of exhaust fumes, the food, the noise and all the spinning rides makes my stomach churn but I LOVE the colours! So I had to take the opportunity for a few snaps back in October.

Elvaston Castle is fast becoming one of my favourite locations for a shoot. Especially early (ish!) on a November morning, when there's misty sunshine like last Saturday. Gorgeous. Brilliant family shoot last week, I'm really pleased with the results.

So..... Claire and Dave's wedding. Before I get carried away, I need to say that I wasn't the OFFICIAL photographer here, but Claire is one of my very best friends from school (not THAT long ago...) and I wanted to catch some memories from a different viewpoint for her and Dave. I'm not sure yet whether weddings are going to ever be my thing as a photographer, but hope these photos show what a fantastic day we all had. Thanks to Claire and Dave for inviting us, and I know you're going to have a very long and happy life together xxx

Thornton's NSPCC golf day [ Event photography ]

I've mentioned before that I work at Thornton's in my 'day job' which has its obvious benefits (if you're a chocolate lover, like me). Another benefit for me recently was that I was asked to shoot for a charity golf day being held at Oulton Hall in Yorkshire, in aid of the NSPCC which is Thornton's chosen charity. This isn't my usual thing (I even had to borrow a lens!) but I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and I'm pretty sure everyone else had a fantastic day too.

Big thanks to the Purchasing department at Thornton's for all their hard work in planning the event, and for inviting me along, and to all the suppliers who attended and in doing so contributed to raising even more money for the NSPCC.

Prom shoot [ Nottingham photography ]

My first prom shoot! And I REALLY enjoyed it. We picked the best time of day to do it, which was in the evening of a sunny day, and headed out to Wollaton Park in my home town of Nottingham. I was absolutely blown away by how stunning they both looked, and got some fantastic shots (if I do say so myself!!). And the girls didn't even complain about me dragging them all over the park to find the best locations. :)

Another birthday draw winner! [ Nottinghamshire photographer ]

This little girl was the winner of the birthday draw in November, it took ages for us to find a good time to take the session but we got there in the end! We decided to meet at Sherwood Forest, had a lovely walk round on a Saturday morning recently with her mum, sisters and tiny little brother. Such a quiet little girl and good as gold, she did everything I asked her to do and was a brilliant little model! These are some of my favourite photos from the session.

Those of you who 'Like' my Facebook page will already have seen most of these snaps, but I wanted to share them here anyway as I thought they really captured the feel of the day.

Some of you might already know that photography isn't my first job – in my …. day job ….. I work at Thornton's – yes, the chocolate factory. Thornton's nominated charity this year is the NSPCC, which I know you'll agree is a fantastic cause. The company's aim for the year is to raise £100,000 for the NSPCC, and last weekend Thornton's Gala Day took place on Saturday. After weeks of glorious weather and very little rain, it promised to be a fantastic day ….. and then it rained. Absolutely tipped it down. But that didn't stop anyone! Everything went ahead as scheduled, and luckily later on the sun came out again. Bouncy castles, fire performers, Punch and Judy, crazy golf, circus tricks, factory tours, CHOCOLATE FOUNTAINS, ICE CREAM .... and more.... all added up to a fantastic day. Big thanks to everyone at Thornton's who was involved in the organisation and planning – a great day was had by all!

Well. I was VERY surprised at how much I loved this place! I was expecting stuffy and boring and not worth the entrance fee, and was very, very pleasantly surprised. I thought I wasn't into vintage-y stuff but this place is full of it and I loved it – as did the rest of my family.

For ages I've wanted to get a good shot of the two girls together but it's been really tricky – something about them being family makes it so! - but I think I got some really good ones on Sunday so wanted to share them here.

As well as the expected tram rides, woodland walk, swings, slides and ice cream, there was a vintage car rally going on at the same time. I have a passion for classic and custom cars and was chuffed to get some shots of those too.

For anyone who's interested, there's a 1940's weekend at Crich over Easter – sounds well worth a visit!

DECEMBER birthday draw { Becky }

Every month on my Facebook business page I run a 'birthday prize draw' - if your birthday is in the current month you can leave a comment on the wall of my page to have your name entered into the draw to win a mini photoshoot.

Becky's birthday was in December but it was March before we could actually schedule the shoot! We arranged it for a Sunday morning at West Park in Long Eaton. The weather was actually ideal in the end - though maybe a little cold! Becky is a dance and drama student and full of confidence. :) We had a lovely natter as we strolled round the park, and I think I got some great shots of her. Last weekend I attended a photography workshop run by the wonderful Jo Rutherford, of Jo Rutherford Photography. Jo organises regular photography walkabouts in the Southport area but unfortunately for me the distance is really too much for me to get over there for just a day, so when she announced last year that she was going to be running ‘Photocamp’ in Southport in February, I snapped up the chance without a second thought. A whole weekend to spend with like-minded photographers – who were all female! – what more could a girl want?!

So we spent two days sharing ideas, chatting about business, learning about lighting and discussing products, as well as shooting professional models. I can’t say I didn’t find it tricky working with models – when you’re used to shooting children (in purely a photographic way, of course!) trying to direct an adult is a step in another direction. But the models were great – true professionals.

And on top of all that, on Saturday evening we hit the bowling alley (shame I didn’t actually hit many of those skittle things) and the Chinese restaurant and after a lot of wine and girly chat, most of us didn’t get to bed until the early hours of Sunday!

This is definitely my longest post ever and I hope I’m not rambling too much, so I’ll sign off here, but remember – “What happens at Photocamp, stays at Photocamp”! With the exception of the photos of course, my favourites of the ones I took are below, I hope you like them. 

I also must take this opportunity to give Jo Rutherford a big BIG thank you for such a fabulous weekend, and to everyone who helped her organise and run it. Also thank you to all the girls who attended for your fab company and all the idea sharing, and to the models who were outside in the freezing cold, wind and rain for ages in nothing but skimpy little outfits!!

Newborns - SPECIAL OFFER

All newborn sessions taken in February and March 2011 are half price! So that is just £30 for the shoot, and includes a 9" x 6" print of your choice.

Newborn sessions typically last longer than a normal shoot (up to 3 hours) as we need to allow for feeding, changing and hopefully getting your little one to sleep so we can capture some of those gorgeous curled up poses! Newborns are best photographed in the first 2 weeks of their lives.
As with other sessions, your proofs will be available online in your own password protected gallery within 2 weeks of the shoot, and there will be around 20-25 shots to choose from.

If you are expecting please contact me for further details now, and we can pencil you in for an appointment around you due date, to be confirmed after your baby's arrival.

Every month on my Facebook page I run a prize draw competition where anyone who has a birthday in the following month can enter their name for the chance to win a free mini photoshoot with a print included.

This young fella was the winner of the September prize draw. His mum told me he was a bit shy, but I didn't think so! He soon warmed up to it and before long was rolling in leaves and climbing trees. I got some great shots, here are just a few of them.

It's been said that here in the UK we are somewhat behind the US with our photography trends. And while I hate to admit it, it certainly does seem that way with photographing newborn babies.

Remember those gorgeous Anne Geddes pictures, of babies in plant pots with daisy hats on? The trend has moved on a bit now, but I'm sure Anne Geddes's work was the inspiration behind today's trend in the US – which is slowly but surely making its way across the pond. :-)

Every day while I'm browsing the net in my little world of photography, I see gorgeous pictures of newborns wearing little handmade crocheted hats, or swaddled in beautiful blankets or even hanging from a tree in a sling!

I haven't been quite so adventurous yet, but wanted to share some shots from a session I did back in August, when this little fella was just under 2 weeks old. These kind of sessions, I've found, require more than just a little patience! His mum and dad spent a LONG time trying to get him to sleep so we could try some different poses, but he was having none of it! We got there in the end though, and here are the results.

Sooooo... (and here's the plug!) … if you're expecting, or know someone who is, please send them my way as I will soon have a little stash of those lovely handmade hats to use, and I can't wait to get my hands on another squidgy newborn!!

You should recognise this face from my blog header. :) This happy little girl was the winner of the July birthday draw on my Facebook page, and she'd just taken her first steps a day or two before the shoot. She was pretty steady on her feet too! She was adorable, and didn't even complain when it started pouring with rain when we were outside. Mum and I decided it was best to dash back indoors though and get a few more shots there!

I know everyone groans about Christmas coming earlier every year, but for some things you have to plan early.
